The most popular films from the 32nd edition of the Art Film International Film Festival are coming to Kino Lumière in Bratislava. From 3 to 17 September 2026, across three September Thursdays, the Echoes of Art Film (Ozveny Art Filmu) showcase will present three exceptional cinematic experiences: the gripping crime thriller Tuner by Oscar-winning director Daniel Roher, starring Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman; the French crime drama The Money Maker (L’affaire Bojarski), inspired by the true story of a legendary counterfeiter; and the acclaimed chamber drama Calle Málaga, which won over audiences at the Venice Film Festival.
Strong stories, outstanding performances and titles that made their mark at prestigious world festivals get a second chance to reach audiences beyond the festival days. “Echoes is our way of bringing Art Film’s most appealing titles to audiences even after the festival ends. We chose three films that resonated the most in Košice, and we are delighted that Bratislava audiences can now enjoy them too,” says the festival’s artistic director Martin Palúch.
Tuner
Screening: 3 September at 6:30 p.m., Kino Lumière
A gripping crime thriller with elements of drama and romance, Tuner is the narrative feature debut of Canadian documentary filmmaker Daniel Roher, who won the Sundance Audience Award in 2022 for the documentary Navalny and went on to receive the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Its protagonist is piano tuner Niki, whose exceptionally sensitive hearing lets him “hear” the mechanism of safes and open them. When financial troubles close in, he is drawn into a world of crime that threatens both his relationships and his own identity. Dustin Hoffman appears as his mentor, alongside Leo Woodall in the lead role. Sound, noise and music become both a device of tension and a way for the viewer to experience the protagonist’s world. The film premiered at the Telluride and Toronto festivals and was included in Canada’s Top Ten 2025.
The Money Maker (L’affaire Bojarski)
Screening: 10 September at 6:00 p.m., Kino Lumière
A gripping French crime film by director Jean-Paul Salomé, inspired by the true story of one of the most ingenious money counterfeiters of the 20th century. In post-war France, Polish refugee and engineer Jan Bojarski uses his extraordinary technical talent to produce near-perfect banknotes. For years he makes them in secret in his own backyard, in such quality that they fool even the Bank of France. Against him stands an obsessed commissioner for whom the case turns into a personal mission and a dramatic game of cat and mouse. Reda Kateb portrays Bojarski with conviction and sensitivity, making the character feel not merely a criminal but a man shaped by circumstances and inner conflicts.
Calle Málaga
Screening: 17 September at 6:00 p.m., Kino Lumière
An acclaimed chamber drama by Moroccan director Maryam Touzani, a tender reflection on ageing, identity and the right to decide about one’s own life. The peaceful life of ageing Spanish woman María Ángeles, who has spent her whole life in Tangier, is upended when her daughter decides to sell the flat where María has lived for decades. María refuses to accept the loss of her home and sets out to fight for her living space and her memories. Step by step she regains energy, rebuilds relationships and rediscovers love and desire. Carmen Maura, Pedro Almodóvar’s muse, excels in the lead role. The film won the Audience Award in the Venice Spotlight section at the Venice International Film Festival and became Morocco’s candidate for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
The Echoes of Art Film showcase runs at Kino Lumière from 3 to 17 September 2026. Tickets and more information are available on the Kino Lumière website (kino-lumiere.sk).
