The day begins ceremoniously at 9:00 a.m. in the East Slovak Museum. The opening of the exhibition Helena Vondráčková – 60 Years on Stage presents more than 500 original items from the career of one of the greatest stars of Czechoslovak popular music and film. Starting Saturday, the show is open to the public, with a discount for Cinepass holders. Don’t miss this chance to step into the world of this exceptional singer, actress and style icon.
At 10:00 a.m. in Kulturpark JOJ CINEMA, the International Competition of Films from Central and Eastern Europescreens Minghun, directed by Jan P. Matuszyński. Visually striking, the drama follows a father taking part in the post-mortem Chinese “spirit wedding” of his own daughter, offering an intimate meditation on grief, guilt, cultural distance and the search for reconciliation.
At 11:00 a.m. in Kino Veritas, the programme strand György Kristóf Presents continues with the powerful dystopian vision Atlantis by Valentyn Vasyanovych. Made in 2019, the Ukrainian film looks ahead to a post-war future, following a former soldier in a devastated land struggling to rise again — a chilling yet moving reflection on trauma, memory and the quest for humanity amid collapse.
The afternoon slot at 1:30 p.m. in Kulturpark JOJ PLAY brings the documentary Like Tears in Rain, which uses home-movie footage and testimony from colleagues and friends to map the life of actor Rutger Hauer. Directed by his god-daughter Sanna Fabery de Jonge, the intimate portrait won Best Documentary at this year’s Beverly Hills festival.
At 4:00 p.m. in Kulturpark JOJ CINEMA, the strand New Hope in Contemporary Chinese Cinema presents the outstanding debut To Kill a Mongolian Horse. Jiang Xiaoxuan’s film follows Saina, a Mongolian rider caught between the traditional life of the steppe and the harsh reality of the modern world. It received Best Director and Best Screenplay in Venice.
A tribute to Daniela Kolářová, recipient of the Actor’s Mission Award, unfolds at 5:00 p.m. in Kino Veritas with a screening of the legendary The Elementary School. Full of humour, nostalgia and emotion, the film showcases Kolářová in one of her most memorable roles.
In the evening at 7:30 p.m., Kulturpark JOJ PLAY revisits the International Competition of Feature Films. Sorry, Baby, directed by Eva Victor, is a razor-sharp black comedy about a professor grappling with sexual assault. The film, which stunned and enchanted audiences at Sundance and Cannes, is among the most distinctive voices in this year’s competition.
The cinematic marathon ends at 8:00 p.m. in Kino Veritas with Being Maria, in which director Jessica Palud uses interviews and reconstructions to expose the dark side of shooting Last Tango in Paris and restores the missing perspective of the young Maria Schneider, long sidelined by film history. A powerful statement on power, vulnerability and justice.
