During the 30th edition of the Art Film IFF, visitors can look forward not only to dozens of popular and attractive feature and short films but also to a diverse INDUSTRY program. It will guide them through the ins and outs of filmmaking through professional masterclasses and educational presentations led by prominent directors and other professionals of the film industry. The program will shed light on the creative filmmaking processes that film school students, but especially audiences, are curious about. The jubilee edition of the Art Film IFF thus offers a unique opportunity to get very close to the film and its behind-the-scenes.
Cristi Puiu, one of Romania’s most important directors, whose film THE DEATH OF MR. LAZARESCU (2005) helped define the formally austere social-critical direction of the “Romanian New Wave”, and will present his masterclass. This title, by the way, will also be included in the festival programme. In addition to giving an expert lecture at the Art Film IFF, the director will receive the prestigious Golden Camera Award.
Miloslav Luther, a Slovak director and another laureate of the Golden Camera Award, whose rich works includes adaptations of world and domestic literary pieces, will also come to Košice to pass on his knowledge. In the Golden Camera section, dedicated to honoured authors, we will also see his latest film SLEEPING ACCOUNT.
Another Slovak filmmaker who will present his masterclass on the stages of filmmaking from the theme to the final cut will be Michal Kollár, the author of the successful thriller The Red Captain or the comedy Villa Lucia, and a filmmaker with rich experience in film and series production, which he is be happy to share.
The producer Patrik Pašš and the writer Tomáš Koňařík will present their upcoming co-production project Hunter as part of the INDUSTRY program. Find out how an unconventional mystery detective story with an experimental twist is being prepared in co-production with the Czech Republic.
You can also look forward to an expert lecture by the world-renowned director Serhiy Loznitsa, whose documentary INVASION, about the current situation in Russia and Ukraine, was recently nominated for the Golden Eye Award for documentary film at the Cannes Film Festival, but will have its exclusive Slovak premiere at Art Film, where the author will also receive the honorary Golden Camera Award. Don’t miss a meeting with the winner of the FIPRESCI Award and the Un Certain Regard Award for Directing from the Cannes IFF.
We have great news for football fans as well. Juraj Čurný will present the upcoming documentary film called JOE THE FIRST about the world coaching legend Jozef Vengloš in the presence of the film’s producer Branko Capa, who will answer interesting questions not only from behind the scenes of the filming.
The program will also include expert and popularization lectures in the field of film professions. The first of six special presentations will be led by Ján Melikant, a project manager of the Film Office of the Košice Region, and Peter Neveďal, a film producer, who will give you an insight into what is behind the professional abbreviations 1st, 2nd AC in the world of filmmaking.
Martin Polerecký will talk about the importance of post-production “grading” or “colouring” a raw image so that the film on the big screen or TV screen looks as good as possible and according to the intentions and ideas of its creators.
Editor and director Peter Pavlík will talk about the importance and the issues of film trailers, which always help us to tune in to new releases in cinemas. Over time, “trailers” have become a distinct art form that has its ever evolving practices. Do not hesitate to learn more about them.
Ján Šipikal, a software developer for video assistants, and Peter Neveďal, a developer and film producer, will present the specific work of video assistant operator, and experts from Petrík FX, a company in Košice, will introduce the application of special film effects, which are still irreplaceable even with the rapid development of digital ones. You will learn how fog, fire, rain or wind are created for film and much more.
When we hear the phrase “film crew”, many of us think of sound engineers and lighting technicians in addition to director and cameraman. If you have thought that the sound engineer just holds the microphone, you will learn from Tobias Potočný and Boris Seitler that this was a big mistake. They’ll tell you about the alchemy of sound production, as well as the difference between sound in a feature film and sound in a daytime soap opera. Gaffer Daniel Kontuľ will explain how it is possible to create a day in the middle of the night and vice versa with practical demonstrations.
If you are keen on the fidelity of costumes or props when watching historical films, then you will certainly be interested in the lecture by Petr Hricák, who specializes in exploring the application of craft techniques with an emphasis on the faithful reproduction of historical material culture, as well as the production of credible replicas of armour, weaponry or clothing. It will introduce you to the whole process of replica production, from the choice of the topic, through different approaches to the final product of high visual quality.
For enthusiasts or collectors, there will also be an exchange of film media connected with a lecture on their collector’s value, which will also be led by Juraj Čurný.
Also the director of the Audiovisual Fund Mgr. Vladimír Burianek, ArtD. and its administrator Mgr. Bohumír Bobocký, ArtD. will visit Art Film to present its diverse activities and its fundamental influence on the creation of fiction, documentary and animated films in Slovakia on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of this institution for the promotion of audiovisual culture.
