User’s Manual in Competition of Short Films

It compiles the life of humans on planet Earth, from birth until death. The picture is a quick, pocket-size user’s manual to life here on Earth at nine different points, each its own chapter.

Its development took roughly one year, with filming in fifteen production plants in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland, most of which were assembly lines. Among those involved were former and current VŠMU students, together with members of the artists’ collective Almostar. The creators of the fascinating picture included guests Koen Dejaegher (director of the film The Altruists), Mihala Brezis (Israeli director of the film Lost Paradise), experimental film legend Christoph Girardet (director of the film Contre-jour) and Rúnar Rúnarsson (director of the film Two Birds), who has won six film awards. The film’s story plays out in a single summer night. A young teenager is in love with his friend, but he is too shy to tell her. When the party ends with drugs, alcohol and a rape, their childhood ends as well, ushering in the tough reality of adulthood. Other treats the section has in store include This Way Up from directors Alan Smith and Oscar-nominated Adam Foulkes, and last but not least, one of the most emotional films in the section, director Magnus von Horn’s Echo.
