Václav Vorlíček to Receive Golden Camera

Mr. Vorlíček has always been attracted to storytelling. Before he even began studying at the Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU), he gained experience as an assistant to Martin Frič at Barrandov studios, later continuing to work in film studios until his official retirement in 1992. And yet he still shoots films even today. He has chiefly gained popularity and recognition with his comedies and fairytales. With screenwriter Miloš Macourek, he formed the successful filmmaking duo behind a great many successful pictures, often gleefully combining reality with the world of fantasy. Even their first joint work, the cartoon parody Kdo chce zabít Jesii (Who Wants to Kill Jessie?, 1966), was quite successful at home and abroad. Vorlíček continued to shoot over thirty titles for the silver screen, many of which became true cult classics, such as Pane, vy jste vdova! (You Are a Widow, Sir!, 1970), Dívka na koštěti (The Girl on the Broom, 1971), Což takhle dát si špenát (How About a Plate of Spinach?, 1977) and Mach, Šebestová a kouzelné sluchátko (Mach, Šebestová and the Magic Phone, 2001). The fairytale Tři oříšky pro Popelku (Three Nuts for Cinderella, 1973) was even declared as the best filmed fairytale of last century by a Czech audience survey, and to this day the film has fans at home as well as abroad, watched every Christmas on televisions everywhere from Germany to Norway.

Vorlíček has also worked actively for television, where he has created many popular serials such as Křeček v noční košili (Hamster in a Nightshirt, 1987) and Létajíci Čestmír (Flying Čestmír, 1983). And his serial Arabela (1979) is renowned not only in the Czech and Slovak republics, but internationally as well.

But when on the subject of Vorlíček’s most successful films, we cannot leave out Sokoliar Tomáš (Thomas the Falconer), which came in second place at the 2000 Chicago International Children’s Film Festival and an Honorable Mention at the Cottbus FF.
