The Ozveny Art Filmu (Echoes of Art Film) showcase at Bratislava’s Kino Lumière opened with the gripping crime thriller Tuner by Oscar-winning director Daniel Roher, starring Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman. The most popular films of the 32nd Art Film International Film Festival continue at Kino Lumière with two more Thursday screenings: the French crime drama The Money Maker on 10 September and the acclaimed chamber drama Calle Málaga on 17 September.
Tuner, which had its Slovak premiere at Art Film in Košice in June, confirmed its reputation as one of the festival’s strongest audience titles in Bratislava as well. The audience received the film with great enthusiasm, and its gripping story and unusual theme of a sensitive ear on the edge of the law resonated long after the screening. Among those who came to see the film was recent Hercova misia (Actor’s Mission) award laureate Anna Šišková, joined by Marta Sládečková and Kamila Magálová; also in the audience were Andrea Karnasová, Barbora Bakošová, Bronislava Kováčiková and Magdaléna Šebestová.
“We are delighted by the interest Bratislava audiences showed in the opening film of the showcase. Tuner proved that the power of Art Film works beyond Košice, and I believe The Money Maker and Calle Málaga will offer audiences an equally intense experience,” says the festival’s artistic director Martin Palúch.

The Money Maker (L’affaire Bojarski)
Screening: 10 September at 6:00 p.m., Kino Lumière
A gripping French crime film by director Jean-Paul Salomé, inspired by the true story of one of the most ingenious money counterfeiters of the 20th century. In post-war France, Polish refugee and engineer Jan Bojarski produces near-perfect banknotes in his own backyard, in such quality that they fool even the Bank of France. Against him stands an obsessed commissioner for whom the case turns into a dramatic game of cat and mouse. Bojarski is played by Reda Kateb.
Calle Málaga
Screening: 17 September at 6:00 p.m., Kino Lumière
The showcase closes with an acclaimed chamber drama by Moroccan director Maryam Touzani, a tender reflection on ageing, identity and the right to decide about one’s own life. The peace of ageing Spanish woman María Ángeles, who has spent her whole life in Tangier, is disrupted when her daughter decides to sell her flat. Carmen Maura, Pedro Almodóvar’s muse, excels in the lead role. The film won the Audience Award in the Venice Spotlight section at the Venice International Film Festival and became Morocco’s candidate for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
