Miloslav Luther is the next laureate of the Golden Camera at the Art Film 2024 IFF

One of the most important Slovak film and television directors, Miloslav Luther, will receive an award for domestic and foreign film professionals at the 30th edition of the oldest and largest Slovak film festival – Art Film – in Košice. Since 2001, the Golden Camera has been awarded to 44 outstanding personalities from various cinematography professions.

Miloslav Luther began in the world of film as an assistant director and associate director in significant films by Stanislav Barabáš (A Gentle Creature), Ivan Balaďa (The Lady) and Elo Havetta (Celebration in the Botanical Garden). After graduating from FAMU in Prague, he joined the Slovak Television as a director, where he moved from news and journalism to directing television productions and feature films. He tended to produce the adaptations of important pieces of Slovak and world literature. Already for his second television film, an adaptation of Thomas Mann’s short story Mario and the Magician (1976), starring Juraj Kukura, he won several awards, including the Silver Nymph at the Monte Carlo International Television Festival. In 1983 he filmed a five-part television miniseries The Physician of a Dying Time about the life journey of Jan Jessenius. It traces his activities in Rudolphine Prague until his death on the scaffold following the defeat of the Bohemian Estates’ anti-Habsburg uprising. It was also edited into a film version called The Witness of a Dying Era.

His debut film was the fairy tale King Thrushbeard (1984) and two years later he made an adaptation of Dobšinský’s Mahuliena, Golden Maiden within this genre. His other films Forget Mozart (1985), A Path across the Danube(1989), Angel of Mercy (1993) won several domestic and international awards. In cooperation with his brother, cinematographer Igor Luther, he made two films: The Tango with Mosquitoes (2009) and Step into the Dark (2014). His activities in the field of pedagogy as well as in the organisation and support of Slovak production within the Audiovisual Fund are also significant. Miloslav Luther will present his latest film The Dormant Account (2024) as well as Escape to Buda (2002) – director’s version (2006) at Art Film and he has prepared his masterclass for film professionals and fans alike.

Martin Palúch, the Art Director of Art Film IFF, said about the doyen of Slovak film directing: “I am really happy that this year the Slovak director Miloslav Luther will receive the Golden Camera award. His directorial conception is characterised by a realistic portrayal of an atmosphere, even though the stories he chooses are set in turbulent historical periods. The characters of his films are thrown into unconventional situations in which they have to struggle with power and circumstances while facing strong inner dilemmas. It doesn’t matter whether they are historical figures or ordinary mortals.”

After the Romanian director Cristi Puiu, the Art Film 2024 IFF introduces yet another prominent personality who will visit the festival. The 30th edition of the festival will take place in Košice from 21 to 28 June and offer more than 120 films in twelve programme sections along with a rich accompanying programme. All information about the festival is continuously updated on its website www.iffartfilm.com as well as its official accounts on social networks.
