Imagine a single week during which the paths of European cinema cross in one city. Fatih Akin<\/strong> \u2014 director of Head-On (Proti m\u00faru)<\/strong> (Golden Bear from the Berlinale) and his latest Amrum (Ostrov Amrum)<\/strong> \u2014 comes to Ko\u0161ice to receive the Golden Camera for lifetime achievement. He is joined by Siddiq Barmak<\/strong>, the author of the legendary Osama<\/strong> \u2014 the first Afghan film made after the Taliban era, which twenty-two years ago took home a Golden Globe and the Cam\u00e9ra d’Or \u2013 Special Jury Mention from Cannes; he has appeared in Europe only sparingly since then. Piotr Domalewski<\/strong>, the Polish director whose Golden Lions from the Gdynia Film Festival 2025 confirmed his position as the strongest auteur voice in contemporary Polish cinema, is bringing his Altar Boys (Mini\u0161tranti)<\/strong> for its Slovak premiere. Two domestic icons will visit the eastern metropolis \u2014 first Anna \u0160i\u0161kov\u00e1<\/strong>, to receive the Actor’s Mission Award, and as soon as Ko\u0161ice bids her farewell, singer and songwriter Richard M\u00fcller<\/strong> arrives to accept the Milan Lasica Award on behalf of his father Vlado M\u00fcller<\/strong>. Mohammed Almughanni<\/strong>, a Palestinian director from Gaza, brings to the jury a perspective rarely heard in the Central European region.<\/p>\n

The 32nd edition of IFF Art Film Ko\u0161ice (19 \u2013 25 June 2026) brings encounters that may not recur any time soon. During this week the city becomes a space where the paths of European cinema and authors who travel only sparingly cross. Several layers of guests weave through the festival programme: laureates arrive with their own retrospectives, masterclasses and personally introduced screenings; the international jury meets the filmmakers directly in the screening halls; delegations of Slovak premieres introduce their films to the audience; and live shows, concerts and meetings unfold at the Historic Town Hall, Z\u00e1hradn\u00e9 kino, and Kulturpark. Below is a guide to the names that make it worth buying a cinepass for IFF Art Film Ko\u0161ice.<\/p>\n

Three laureate awards, three encounters that may not recur<\/strong><\/p>\n

The highlight of the entire edition is the personal visit of the German director Fatih Akin<\/strong>, who will receive the Golden Camera in Ko\u0161ice for outstanding contribution to cinema. The author of Head-On<\/strong> (Golden Bear from the Berlinale) and his latest Amrum<\/strong> (Cannes 2025) ranks among the most distinctive European directors of his generation. You will be able to meet him several times in Ko\u0161ice: at a masterclass within the Industry programme, at personally introduced screenings of both his films and at the closing ceremony where he will accept the Golden Camera. For the film audience, this is the kind of encounter that only happens in the Central European region once in a few years.<\/p>\n

The Actor’s Mission Award of the 32nd edition goes to Anna \u0160i\u0161kov\u00e1<\/strong> \u2014 an actress who, since the 1990s, has stood by the strongest films of Slovak and Czech cinema: Filthy (\u0160pina)<\/strong> (directed by her daughter Tereza Nvotov\u00e1), Divided We Fall (Mus\u00edme si pom\u00e1ha\u0165)<\/strong> (Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film), The Garden (Z\u00e1hrada)<\/strong>,Escape to Buda (\u00datek do Bud\u00edna)<\/strong>, and is currently appearing in the TV series The Promise (S\u013eub)<\/strong>. In Ko\u0161ice, on Friday 19 June, she will personally introduce the screening of Divided We Fall<\/strong> and on the same day she will officially receive the Actor’s Mission Award. Fans, however, can enjoy this honour most of all on Saturday 20 June, when she will accept it again before the public at Kulturpark. The actress will be supported by her daughters Tereza<\/strong> and Dorota Nvotov\u00e1<\/strong>. The opening of Art Film thus brings two festival days during which fans can meet a legend of the Slovak and Czech acting scene in person.<\/p>\n

As soon as Ko\u0161ice bids her farewell, another domestic icon arrives. On Sunday 21 June, the Milan Lasica Award is presented from the hands of Magda V\u00e1\u0161aryov\u00e1<\/strong> \u2014 on behalf of his father Vlado M\u00fcller<\/strong> \u2014 to singer and songwriter Richard M\u00fcller<\/strong>, the author of dozens of songs that every generation has known since the 1980s. Fans can meet him during the Sunday evening special edition of the talk show Dinner with Havran (Ve\u010dera s Havranom)<\/strong> at the Historic Town Hall, where he will be the guest.<\/p>\n

Twelve jurors, seven countries, four awards<\/strong><\/p>\n

The festival’s four juries bring twelve film personalities from seven countries to Ko\u0161ice. The Blue Angels in the International Feature Film Competition<\/strong> will be decided by the Icelandic director Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigur\u00f0sson<\/strong> \u2014 author of the acclaimed Icelandic tragicomedy Under the Tree (Pod stromom)<\/strong> and his latest Northern Comfort<\/strong>; the Slovak screenwriter and dramaturge Barbora N\u00e1merov\u00e1<\/strong>; and the Hungarian film critic and festival programmer G\u00e9za Cs\u00e1kv\u00e1ri<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The most distinctive name in the entire jury line-up is Siddiq Barmak<\/strong>, president of the jury of the International Competition of Central and Eastern European Films<\/strong>. The Afghan director, author of the film Osama<\/strong> \u2014 the first film made in Afghanistan after the Taliban era, which in 2004 won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and the Cam\u00e9ra d’Or \u2013 Special Jury Mention at Cannes \u2014 has appeared in Europe only sparingly since his festival triumph. In addition to meeting him, the festival will also present an encore screening of Osama<\/strong> for Slovak audiences. He is joined by the Kazakh film historian Gulnara Abikeyeva<\/strong> and the Polish-British professor of film studies Ewa Mazierska<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The International Short Film Competition<\/strong> will be decided by the Palestinian director Mohammed Almughanni<\/strong> \u2014 born in Gaza, a graduate of the prestigious \u0141\u00f3d\u017a Film School and the author of the closely watched short drama An Orange from Jaffa (Pomaran\u010d z Jaffy)<\/strong> about a young Palestinian crossing an Israeli checkpoint. The film received a Special Mention from the IFF Art Film jurors in 2024. His presence on the jury is, in today’s geopolitical context, an event in itself. He is joined by the Polish film historian Maciej Gil<\/strong> and the Slovak documentary filmmaker Barbora Sliepkov\u00e1<\/strong> (Lines \/ \u010ciary).<\/p>\n

The fourth \u2014 International FIPRESCI Jury<\/strong> \u2014 will award a separate critics’ prize and consists of the French film critic Pierre-Yves Roger<\/strong>, the Dutch critic Clementine van Wijngaarden<\/strong> and the Slovak journalist Mat\u00fa\u0161 Kvasni\u010dka<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Fans can meet the jurors during the screenings of the films competing in the individual competitions.<\/p>\n

Slovak season: the makers of the strongest domestic premieres<\/strong><\/p>\n

The opening film of the 32nd edition \u2014 the mysterious drama Wirbel<\/strong> \u2014 brings to Ko\u0161ice the debut director Tom\u00e1\u0161 Hub\u00e1\u010dek<\/strong> with the whole team (actress Judit Pech\u00e1\u010dek<\/strong>, cinematographer Alan Soural<\/strong>, producers Marek Urban<\/strong> and J\u00e1n Macola<\/strong>, sound designer Tobias Poto\u010dn\u00fd<\/strong>). It will be screened right at the opening ceremony and the film is in the Feature Film Competition and also nominated for the FIPRESCI Prize. The audience will not miss out either \u2014 the delegation has prepared both an introduction to the film and a post-screening discussion for the public screening.<\/p>\n

A truly large delegation will also arrive for the world premiere of The Last Season (Posledn\u00e1 sez\u00f3na)<\/strong> by director Pavol Hirjak<\/strong>. The film will be presented in Ko\u0161ice by actors Marko Igonda<\/strong>, Diana Semanov\u00e1<\/strong>, M\u00e1ria Miklo\u0161kov\u00e1<\/strong>, Juraj Stebila<\/strong>, Vanessa Weisz<\/strong>, Tade\u00e1\u0161 Moravec<\/strong>, M\u00e1rio Ma\u010di\u010d\u00e1k<\/strong>, Bronislava Kov\u00e1\u010dikov\u00e1<\/strong>, Franti\u0161ek Bele\u0161<\/strong> and producer Vladim\u00edr Sabado\u0161<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A special visit is prepared by the wide-screen retro comedy Kuko, Drob\u010dek and Ra\u0165af\u00e1k Strike Again (Kuko, Drob\u010dek a Ra\u0165af\u00e1k znova zasahuj\u00fa)<\/strong> directed by Andrej Kolen\u010d\u00edk<\/strong> and Juraj \u0160lauka<\/strong>. The premiere and accompanying programme will be attended by actors Patr\u00edcia Jarjabkov\u00e1 Garajov\u00e1<\/strong>, Andrea Froncov\u00e1<\/strong>, Margar\u00e9ta Nos\u00e1lov\u00e1<\/strong>, Milan Prekop<\/strong>, Radomir Mili\u0107<\/strong>, child actors Boris Ba\u010d\u00edk<\/strong>, Em\u00edlia \u0160irotn\u00edkov\u00e1<\/strong>, Dominika Horv\u00e1thov\u00e1<\/strong> and music composer David Kollar<\/strong>. Anyone nostalgically expecting a children’s film will be surprised.<\/p>\n

Other Slovak guests of the 32nd edition of IFF Art Film include director Tom\u00e1\u0161 Krupa<\/strong> with the team of the documentary We Have to Survive (Mus\u00edme pre\u017ei\u0165)<\/strong> (cinematographer Ond\u0159ej Szollos<\/strong>, editor Peter Kudli\u010dka<\/strong>, composer Dalibor Koci\u00e1n<\/strong>), Lucia Jani\u010dov\u00e1<\/strong> with the British documentary filmmaker Paul Diffley<\/strong> for the documentary Everest: The Mother’s Mountain (Everest: Hora matky)<\/strong>, and director Lea Podhradsk\u00e1<\/strong> with cinematographer Kriszti\u00e1n Oll\u00e1ri<\/strong> for the personal documentary My Father’s Daughter (Dc\u00e9ra m\u00f4jho otca)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

International film authors: Domalewski, Andr\u0161, Geisler and more<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most closely watched international author in the Central and Eastern European competition is the Polish director Piotr Domalewski<\/strong>, the current holder of the Golden Lions from the Gdynia Film Festival 2025 \u2014 the most prestigious award of Polish cinema, which he also received in 2017 for Silent Night (Tich\u00e1 noc)<\/strong>. He comes to Ko\u0161ice with his latest film Altar Boys (Mini\u0161tranti)<\/strong>, honoured immediately after its Polish premiere, and will introduce it to Slovak audiences in person. For the Slovak audience, this is an opportunity to meet an author whom Polish critics describe as one of the strongest voices of his generation.<\/p>\n

The short film competition will be enhanced by the Czech director Jind\u0159ich Andr\u0161<\/strong> and the German director Leo Geisler<\/strong>, who will personally introduce their films. Slovak short film production is represented by director Em\u00edlia Ondria\u0161ov\u00e1<\/strong> and producer Marianna Vadovi\u010dov\u00e1<\/strong> with the short film This Room Cannot Be Eaten (T\u00e1to izba sa ned\u00e1 zjes\u0165)<\/strong>, as well as the Iranian-Slovak director Haman Foulad Vand<\/strong> with the film Man in White (Mu\u017e v bielom)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Live shows, music and culture from all sides<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Historic Town Hall in Ko\u0161ice will host three evenings worth attending even without a festival cinepass. Comedian Milan Kolcun<\/strong>, together with the journalist Peter B\u00e9re\u0161<\/strong>, will bring a special edition of the cult talk show Without a Prompter (Bez \u0161epk\u00e1ra)<\/strong>. You can look forward to actor Mari\u00e1n Mita\u0161<\/strong>, the presenter, actor, director and screenwriter of TV JOJ’s latest series Ko\u010deny Andy Kraus<\/strong>, director of cult Slovak films Du\u0161an Rapo\u0161<\/strong> and festival programming coordinator Magdal\u00e9na Mezoughi<\/strong>, who will reveal the behind-the-scenes of programming films at the festival, communication with distributors, the selection of films into the programme and many other insights from festival practice. The commentary line-up of the popular show SEDEM (Seven)<\/strong> comes live with the journalist Mari\u00e1n Le\u0161ko<\/strong>, standup comedians Matej Ad\u00e1my<\/strong>, Michal Szatmary<\/strong>, Tom\u00e1\u0161 Hud\u00e1k<\/strong> and presenter Elena Vacvalov\u00e1<\/strong>. The third star \u2014 the journalist Michal Havran<\/strong> \u2014 extends his Dinner with Havran (Ve\u010dera s Havranom)<\/strong> format.<\/p>\n

The musical peak of the festival is the evening concert of Mike Parker Trio<\/strong> \u2014 the New York double-bassist and composer who today plays out of Krakow across all of Europe, from the Netherlands to the Baltics, brings his current jazz line-up to Ko\u0161ice. The festival also welcomes singer Christina Mantis<\/strong>, who will perform as a musical guest. And one of the strongest literary moments of the entire edition \u2014 the verses of Ukrainian poet Hera \u2013 Olena Herasymjuk<\/strong> \u2014 will resound in the programme.<\/p>\n

A traditional gateway to familiar faces is the TV JOJ Autograph Session<\/strong> in front of the Historic Town Hall \u2014 free admission, more than thirty actors, presenters and journalists of the channel in one place, including Mari\u00e1n Mita\u0161<\/strong>, Elena Vacvalov\u00e1<\/strong>, Mari\u00e1n Le\u0161ko<\/strong>, Michal Szatmary<\/strong> and Matej Ad\u00e1my<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
