IFF Art Film has been bringing the most engaging works of world and Slovak cinema to the big screen for more than three decades. This year\u2019s edition not only offers a powerful film line-up, but also a host of innovations\u2014from the festival\u2019s first-ever FIPRESCI jury and a new honorary prize to panel talks on artificial intelligence. Artistic director Martin Pal\u00fach<\/strong> tells us what visitors can look forward to\u2014and what they absolutely shouldn\u2019t miss.<\/p>\n

What can visitors to the 31st Art Film see and experience?<\/h4>\n

The most tempting offerings are the contemporary-cinema sections, which present brand-new titles from all over the globe. These include the prestigious International Competition of Feature Films, the International Competition of Short Films and the CEE Competition for films from Central and Eastern Europe. I\u2019d especially like to highlight the premieres of new Slovak features, which will compete in the main sections and appear in the Slovak Season programme.<\/em><\/p>\n

I mustn\u2019t forget the Panorama<\/strong> section\u2014a bouquet of last year\u2019s festival highlights from Cannes, Venice, Locarno, Sundance, the Berlinale and Rotterdam.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ninety features and forty-six shorts are on offer. What mustn\u2019t audiences miss?<\/h4>\n

We secured several Cannes titles, first and foremost the Palme d\u2019Or winner It Was Just an Accident<\/strong>. Its director, Jafar Panahi, was on the Art Film jury back in 2007.<\/em><\/p>\n

Equally important is Two Prosecutors<\/strong> by Sergei Loznitsa, last year\u2019s Golden Camera laureate.<\/em><\/p>\n

We also obtained Sorry, Baby<\/strong> by U.S.-French filmmaker Eva Victor. After its Sundance triumph the film was invited to Cannes\u2014rare for a picture that already holds an award. Audiences will see it in the International Competition of Feature Films.<\/em><\/p>\n

Add to that Luca Guadagnino\u2019s electrifying Queer<\/strong> with Daniel Craig and the documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin<\/strong>, an eye-opening look inside Russia\u2019s education system as it changes under wartime propaganda. Director Pavel Talankin ultimately had to emigrate because of the film.<\/em><\/p>\n

And that is only a taste of what awaits viewers in Ko\u0161ice cinemas until 27 June<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Until now Art Film has hosted three international juries. This year a fourth has been added. What makes it special?<\/h4>\n

We\u2019ve always had three juries of three members each. For the first time we welcome a FIPRESCI jury<\/strong>, comprising three representatives of the International Federation of Film Critics. A FIPRESCI jury hasn\u2019t visited Slovakia in years; it\u2019s one of the most prestigious expert juries on the festival circuit. Hosting it is both an honour and a reward.<\/em><\/p>\n

The festival also features a rich Industry programme. What would you single out?<\/h4>\n

Masterclasses<\/strong> by two big names: renowned Slovak cinematographer Martin \u0160trba (this year\u2019s Golden Camera winner) and the legendary Du\u0161an Tran\u010d\u00edk. We\u2019ll also premiere Tran\u010d\u00edk\u2019s new documentary Operation Monaco<\/strong> in the CEE Competition.<\/em><\/p>\n

A presentation by Peter Harum on using AI in documentary production\u2014a hot topic for filmmakers.<\/em><\/p>\n

U.S. director Alexandre O. Philippe, famous for analytical docs on pop-culture icons (Star Wars, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), will discuss his work; we\u2019ll screen his Venice-laurelled Chain Reactions<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Producer Timea Husz\u00e1r, who works on major HBO and Netflix projects, will share insights into international co-production.<\/em><\/p>\n

And there\u2019s much more on the programme. Just take your pick!<\/em><\/p>\n
