According to the section\u2019s curator, film theorist and critic <strong data-start=\"272\" data-end=\"287\">Martin Ciel<\/strong>, this line-up \u201cexamines contemporary experimental approaches to cinematic language and hints at the direction cinema may take in the future.\u201d Among the section\u2019s stand-out titles are <em data-start=\"471\" data-end=\"482\">Black Dog<\/em>, the Cannes Un Certain Regard winner; the biographical roller-coaster <em data-start=\"553\" data-end=\"574\">Limonov: The Ballad<\/em>; and the essay documentary <em data-start=\"602\" data-end=\"626\">Cleaning and Polishing<\/em>, partially shot in Slovakia.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"659\" data-end=\"1730\"><em>\u201cThis year the regular Love &amp; Anarchy programme focuses on para-documentaries, hybrid films and innovations along the fiction\/documentary frontier\u2014the part of today\u2019s audiovisual landscape that, thanks to new technologies, is ever more intriguing and offers fresh views on reality. Or alternative views. Three of the ten new films presented (Black Dog, Always in Summer, The Report) are standard independent features, yet they remain firmly grounded in an exploration of our shared reality. The other films in the section make full use of observational, staged or participatory methods, or of archival material typical of documentary work. They reveal new aesthetic paths as we gradually move beyond the now-rather-old-fashioned (though still operative!) divide between documentary and fiction. This is what research through art might look like in the future. True, art employs different\u2014perhaps less exact\u2014tools than science or philosophy, yet it can yield an equally precise and profound insight into its subject. And that subject is reality,\u201d<\/em> adds <strong>Martin Ciel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1732\" data-end=\"2071\">Among the ten exceptional works is one of director <strong data-start=\"1783\" data-end=\"1809\">Kirill Serebrennikov\u2019s<\/strong> latest films, <em data-start=\"1824\" data-end=\"1845\">Limonov: The Ballad<\/em> (2024), about Russian writer and dissident <strong data-start=\"1889\" data-end=\"1907\">Eduard Limonov<\/strong>. Serebrennikov recounts Limonov\u2019s perverse story at a mad, kaleidoscopic roller-coaster pace, plunging the viewer into rapture one moment and revulsion the next.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Limonov. Set in an apocalyptic post-industrial landscape, it tells the dramatic tale of a lone hero who clashes with local gangs after befriending a dangerous, wanted dog. Naturalistic performances and a keen eye for realism elicit deep empathy as audiences follow the evolving relationship of a troubled father and his daughters. It reconstructs\u2014or rather deconstructs\u2014the geopolitically absurd occupation of the border city Rijeka by the decadent <strong data-start=\"3695\" data-end=\"3718\">Gabriele D\u2019Annunzio<\/strong>, famed poet, bohemian, war hero and madly charismatic extremist.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FIUME O MORTE! The journey unfolds not only in 1917 but also in the present\u2014and essentially at any time. Fianc\u00e9e Molly relentlessly pursues the tragicomic protagonist in this action-philosophical reflection on film and reality. Often absurd, these TV spots tried to \u201csell\u201d a new lifestyle, meeting with ridicule, misunderstanding and enthusiasm alike. The megalomaniac resort project and its gradual decay into catastrophe become a process the filmmaker records through a dramaturgically balanced collage of dance numbers, performances, archival footage, guests\u2019 and staff memories, news reports and shots of a dinosaur.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"STRANGE ABANDONED DERANGED | Trailer | English Subs | 2024\" width=\"1220\" height=\"686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uwZVGkqPDug?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another film from Cannes\u2014where director <strong data-start=\"5386\" data-end=\"5407\">Roberto Minervini<\/strong>, an acclaimed artist and experimenter, won the 2024 Un Certain Regard directing prize\u2014<em data-start=\"5494\" data-end=\"5508\">The Damned<\/em> (2024) returns to the era of the American Civil War, as the government sends a cavalry unit on a remote reconnaissance mission into \u201cno-man\u2019s-land.\u201d It does not end well.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"THE DAMNED directed by Roberto Minervini - Official Trailer\" width=\"1220\" height=\"686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GjL0sNvX_VM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The melancholic road movie <em data-start=\"5710\" data-end=\"5722\">The Message<\/em> (2025) follows young <strong data-start=\"5744\" data-end=\"5753\">Anika<\/strong>, who has a peculiar gift: she can communicate with animals\u2014or can she? In any case, she becomes a lucrative asset for her guardians, a kindly man and woman who run the entire business. They travel dusty Argentine roads, doggedly seeking clients for this \u201cservice.\u201d Would you like to know what your dog or cat is saying? Told in long, expansive black-and-white takes, the film casts a strange poetic spell, inviting viewers to drift along without worrying about how much is real, since the film explains nothing unnecessarily.
