He first achieved fame with the role of Adam One-Handed in the critically-acclaimed gem of Czechoslovak cinema, Franti\u0161ek Vl\u00e1\u010dil\u2019s Mark\u00e9ta Lazarov\u00e1<\/i> (1967), which featured the debut of a very young Magda V\u00e1\u0161\u00e1ryov\u00e1 as well. Both excelled in their roles alongside Franti\u0161ek Veleck\u00fd. This trio of actors met again in the Czech fairy tale Prince Bajaja<\/i> (1971) from director Anton\u00edn Kachl\u00edk.<\/p>\n
Very few manage to appear in three competing films at Cannes in a single year. In 1969, audiences could see Pal\u00fach in the aforementioned Mark\u00e9ta Lazarov\u00e1<\/i>, as well as Volker Schl\u00f6ndorff\u2019s Michael Kohlhaas \u2013 Der Rebell<\/i> and Aleksander Petrovi\u010d\u2019s It Rains In My Village<\/i>.<\/p>\n
Due to vision problems, Ivan Pal\u00fach had to abandon his studies of acting after his second year. From the beginning of the 1960s, he was a member of theatre companies in, consecutively, Spi\u0161sk\u00e1 Nov\u00e1 Ves, \u017dilina, Pre\u0161ov and Nitra. At Prague\u2019s Divadle na z\u00e1bradl\u00ed (Theatre on the Balustrade) he played the son of national artist Eduard Kohout in Lady With Camelias<\/i>. Among his acting colleagues were Anita Pallenberg, Anton Diffring, Anna Karina, Milo\u0161 Kopeck\u00fd, Pavel Landovsk\u00fd, and even French film legend Annie Girardot.<\/p>\n
Since 1986 he has been a member of Jozef Gregor Tajovsk\u00fd Theatre in Zvolen, his hometown. From 1974 to 1986, Pal\u00fach was banned from performing in films or theatre. Directors could only cast him in episodic roles or as an extra. He gained popularity for his portrayal of the character Adam \u0160angala in the television serial of the same name (1972) by director Karol Spi\u0161\u00e1k.<\/p>\n
He founded the Faculty of Dramatic Arts at Bansk\u00e1 Bystrica\u2019s Academy of Arts, where he managed to bring professors from Prague\u2019s FAMU (Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts) such as directors Du\u0161an Klein and Ji\u0159\u00ed Svoboda.
