And we surely won\u2019t leave out <b><i>The Saga of Burnt Njal<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i>(1980), a&nbsp;short, controversial film based on Iceland&#8217;s most important legend. It also has an interesting history:<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">at its premiere, the audience expected a historical epic, but<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Fridriksson treated his subject in a&nbsp;distinctly non-traditional manner, and the screening ended up a fiasco, forcing the director to leave Reykjavik for a&nbsp;time.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">But he did so with money for his next film in hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Fridriksson captured the beginnings of Iceland\u2019s rock scene in the 1980s, including a<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding: 5px; float: right;\" src=\"uploads\/RTEmagicC_Diablov_ostrov_01.jpg.jpg\" txdam=\"539\" width=\"250\" height=\"199\" alt=\"\" \/> fourteen-year-old Bj\u00f6rk in her band Tappi T\u00edkarrass, in the documentary <b><i>Rock in Reykjavik<\/i> <\/b>(1982), which became an&nbsp;intriguing statement on the contemporaneous music scene and society.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Thanks to this film, Reykjavik earned the title of the city with the most music groups per capita.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Fridriksson\u2019s first feature film, <b><i>White Whales<\/i><\/b> (1987), was bestowed a Special Mention Award from the jury at Locarno.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">It focuses on whalers and whales who end up as outsiders in their natural habitats.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">This was followed by the singular road movie <b><i>Children of Nature<\/i><\/b> (1991), a sensitive tale of ageing and dying which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign-Language Film and brought Fridriksson international critical acclaim.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Art Film Fest will also present the director\u2019s autobiographical memoirs in <b><i>Movie Days <\/i><\/b>(1994), nominated for Locarno&#8217;s Gold Leopard, <b><i>Devil\u2019s Island<\/i><\/b> (1996), recipient of the FIPRESCI Prize at Karlovy Vary and <b><i>On Top Down Under<\/i><\/b> (2000), one part from a televised series of erotic tales which featured other reputable directors such as Mika Kaurism\u00e4ki and Petr Zelenka.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">In addition, the festival will feature one of the Fridriksson\u2019s latest works, the documentary <b><i>The Sunshine Boy<\/i><\/b> (2009), which captivatingly investigates the world of autistic children and ways to help and understand them.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In his films, Fridriksson sensitively joins his ironic sense of humour to a genuine concern for the fates of his protagonists, and he tells their stories with his own incomparable visual style.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">In the section Iceland According to Fridriksson, Art Film Fest will present a total of thirteen films from this distinguished Icelandic director.<\/span><\/p>\n<p> <span lang=\"EN-GB\">Photographs can be found at artfilmfest.sk<\/span> in the Press section.
