You come from a mixed Czech-Slovak family, your parents were devoted to amateur theatre, and your grandfather Jozef Holl\u00fd was a notable Slovak dramatist. Did this family background of yours influence the direction your life has taken?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

My grandpa Jozef Holl\u00fd and grandma Anna Holl\u00e1 had three children: Martin, Elena and Bo\u017eena, who inherited certain artistic abilities from them. My uncle Martin was in my opinion an excellent actor and director, my aunt Elena was a distinguished artist and my mother could have had a brilliant acting career if she hadn\u2019t trekked to Moravia, \u201cthe other side of the mountain\u201d, to marry my father, who also possessed great talent as a performer. These dear forebears of mine provided us children with \u201cartistic" abilities, and we have done the best we could to properly take advantage of these gifts.<\/span><\/p>\n

What does it mean to you to win the Actor\u2019s Mission Award here in Slovakia? Does it make you feel a bit like a Slovak?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

This is an award that I deeply appreciate. I\u2019m surprised and truly delighted that my work has been noticed here in Slovakia, because I hope I haven\u2019t disappointed Mr Andrej Bagar, who recommended me as rector of Bratislava’s Academy of Performing Arts in 1959. Despite the repeated refusal of the political bigwigs in Uhersk\u00e9 Hradi\u0161t\u011b who wanted to prevent me from studying, Mr Bagar took \u201cresponsibility as rector\u201d and accepted me to the Academy. Thanks to this humane and for the time very brave deed of his, I actually became an actor. <\/span><\/p>\n

Over the course of your lifelong acting career, you\u2019ve taken the roles of numerous lovely theatrical characters. In 1961 you gave cinema a try in V\u011bra Chytilov\u00e1’s student film Strop <\/i>(Ceiling). Did you view these first encounters with film differently?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

In my third year at the Theatre Faculty of Prague\u2019s Academy of Performing Arts, I ended up in front of the camera for the first time in a few shots of <\/span>V\u011bra Chytilov\u00e1’s film.<\/span> The first time I saw myself onscreen, I realized the difference between the possibilities of film acting and stage acting.<\/span><\/p>\n

The impact of your cinematic performance can be seen in several extraordinary debuts of the Czecho-Slovak New Wave, such as Jaromil Jire\u0161\u2019s K\u0159ik <\/i>(The Cry), Evald Schorm\u2019s Ka\u017ed\u00fd den odvahu <\/i>(Courage for Every Day), and Du\u0161an Han\u00e1k\u2019s 322<\/i>. How did you perceive that period at the time?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Jaromil Jire\u0161 offered me a part in K\u0159ik <\/i>and filled the rest of the cast with non-actors. After my first meetings with them, I realized that I would have to try my best to \u201cnot act\u201d, as they did, because my histrionics weren\u2019t comparable with their authenticity. It was quite a feat to match the \u201ctruthfulness\u201d of their approach. That was probably how I became more familiar with the authenticity of the New Wave, and I was subsequently given gracious offers by Evald Schorm and Du\u0161an Han\u00e1k.<\/span><\/p>\n

Audiences most often recognize you from the cult film Vrchn\u00ed, prchni! <\/i>(Scram, Waiter!), directed by the recently deceased Ladislav Smoljak. Do you ever think back to your collaboration with him?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

To receive an offer from Mr Smoljak, Mr Sv\u011br\u00e1k, as well as cinematographer Ivan \u0160lapeta was something I took as a deep compliment. Of course I was glad to join in on their brilliant \u201cnon-acting\u201d, and I had the honour to be a part of their incomparable humour.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your admirers’ favourite protagonists have been Dalibor Vr\u00e1na from the aforementioned Vrchn\u00ed, prchni! <\/i>and Doctor Bla\u017eej from the serial \u201cHospital on the Edge of Town\u201d. Which of your characters do you hold dearest, and have you ever played a completely evil role? Because while Vr\u00e1na is a villain, he also has a likeable side… <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Theatre, television, film, radio, dubbing and even TV bedtime stories \u2013 I’ve experienced a wide variety of acting possibilities. Some roles were better than others, but it was still work. And then there were a few roles which I truly cherish. Even so, these are just my personal impressions, basically immeasurable. <\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ve long been married to actress Libu\u0161e \u0160afr\u00e1nkov\u00e1. What is it like to be married to an actress?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Our marriage has never played any role in our collaboration as actors. We always respect each other as performers. Liba has always been above all a surprising and entertaining colleague of mine. As well as my wife. And it\u2019s always been extraordinary.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you hadn\u2019t become an actor, what kind of award might you be accepting today?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

I would greatly appreciate, for example, an award entitled Jazz Piano Improvisation.<\/span><\/p>\n
