{"id":2566,"date":"2010-06-24T10:28:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-24T09:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.artfilmfest.sk\/en\/blog\/uncategorized\/2010\/06\/ive-still-got-my-whole-life-ahead-of-me\/"},"modified":"2016-02-08T12:37:49","modified_gmt":"2016-02-08T11:37:49","slug":"ive-still-got-my-whole-life-ahead-of-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iffartfilm.com\/en\/blog\/highlights\/2010\/06\/ive-still-got-my-whole-life-ahead-of-me\/","title":{"rendered":"I\u2019ve still got my whole life ahead of me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">You first appeared on the silver screen while still a student in 1965, in Dimitrij Plichta\u2019s <i>\u0160erif za mre\u017eami <\/i>(The Sheriff Behind Bars).<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><\/b><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">People also remember you from Martin \u0164ap\u00e1k\u2019s <i>Nevesta h\u00f4\u013e<\/i> (Bride of the Mountains).<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><\/b><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">However, the bulk of your cinema projects have been associated with Czech directors.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><\/b><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">Why is that?<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><\/span><\/b> <span lang=\"EN-US\">When you&#8217;re an actor, you either get an offer or you don&#8217;t.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">The most truthful answer would probably be that more films have been shot in the Czech Republic than in Slovakia, and so I ended up making relatively more films in the Czech Republic, not counting television projects.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">I don\u2019t see any difference between working in either country.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Good co-operation depends on the specific people, the individuality of the director, partners and screenplay.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">&nbsp; <\/span> <b><span lang=\"EN-US\">You were given a splendid film role last year in J\u00falius \u0160ev\u010d\u00edk\u2019s Normal, where you portrayed mass murderer Peter Kurten.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><\/b><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">As an experienced actor, was that a difficult role for you?<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><\/span><\/b> <span lang=\"EN-US\">These kind of extremities are always a bit exceptional.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">That\u2019s what makes them extreme.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">I think an actor prepares for every role in the same way.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Anthony Hopkins probably put it best when asked how he prepared for a role and answered:<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">I put on my jacket and I get to work\u201d [laughs].<\/span> <b><span lang=\"EN-US\">The film <i>Papilio<\/i> from director Ji\u0159\u00ed Svoboda, which will be screened at the festival, was chosen by you.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><\/b><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">Does this picture hold some kind of special significance for you?<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><\/span><\/b> <span lang=\"EN-US\">I truly believe that it was a fascinating collaboration.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">An excellent screenplay, an excellent director, a brilliant cinematographer, and I had outstanding fellow performers.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">I also considered selecting the film <i>Dob\u0159\u00ed holuby se vracej\u00ed<\/i> (Good Pigeons Return), but it had already been shown at cinemas and on television many times.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">Papilio<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\"> isn\u2019t as well known, but I think it\u2019s very good.<\/span> <b><span lang=\"EN-US\">Could you describe your role in the film?<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><\/span><\/b> <span lang=\"EN-US\">I\u2019ve just about forgotten [laughs].<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">But seriously, the story unfolds under the extreme conditions of the [Czechoslovak] protectorate.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">My character is searching for a place in the sun and freedom of expression, to the point that he ends up breaking the law.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">He is a strong individual who attempts to cruise through those times,<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">often ending up in conflicts which he then has to resolve; but it all ends tragically.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">I think it\u2019s a lovely story.<\/span> <b><span lang=\"EN-US\">You\u2019ve taken on several different professions over the course of your life.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><\/b><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">But you\u2019ve always returned to acting, where you got your start as a young man.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><\/b><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">Would you say it\u2019s difficult to complete an actor\u2019s mission, once you&#8217;ve already begun it?<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><\/span><\/b> <span lang=\"EN-US\">That depends completely on the individual.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">I know actors who finished at sixty and said &quot;no more&quot;, and then there are actors who are significantly older than me and still perform.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">It\u2019s most likely an individual choice.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Even as a pensioner, I can\u2019t imagine my life without my work.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">And that\u2019s why I don\u2019t want to hold a public office anymore, nor manage any kind of institution;
