His documentary \u201cGaruda Power –\u00a0The Spirit Within\u201d will show you what a thorny path led to the success \u00a0– with a tinge of Pyrrhic victory – of Indonesian cinema, a tradition that\u00a0is more closely linked to the action genre than most other national\u00a0 cinemas. Indeed, Indonesia\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0 first- ever feature-length film, \u201cThe Magic Monkey\u201d (Loetoeng Kasaroeng, 1926, d. L. Heuveldorp), is an action-packed adaption of a\u00a0 folktale. Through a selection of films and\u00a0 interviews with film professionals, critics and regular people,\u00a0 punctuated by moments of humour and melancholy, the documentary unobtrusively provides a cutaway view of the genre, identifying the factors that have shaped it from its origins to the present. Despite the international but isolated success of \u201cThe Raid\u201d and its sequel, the film also draws attention to the still-unflattering status of not only the action genre, but Indonesian cinema as such.
