On Saturday, 23 June 2018, the closing ceremony at Ko\u0161ice\u2019s Kunsthalle concluded the 26th Art Film Fest International Film Festival. The festival\u2019s nine days culminated in the bestowal of the Blue Angel <\/strong>and Actor’s Mission <\/strong>awards.<\/p>\n

The Blue Angel for Best Feature Film went to Danish psychological thriller The Guilty<\/strong> (Den skyldige, 2018) from director Gustav M\u00f6ller. The story of an emergency call operator was selected by the international jury for its convincingness, particularly its \u201cpowerful storytelling and intense visuality.\u201d In the jury\u2019s words, the film \u201cnever lets the audience off the hook\u201d.<\/p>\n

Thanks to The Guilty<\/strong>, another statuette will also make its way to Denmark \u2013 the Blue Angel for Best Male Performance. According to the jury, \u201cEvery look, every breath, every little move\u201d of lead actor Jakob Cedergren <\/strong>\u201ckeeps the audience in the highest state of suspense and emotional involvement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Best Female Performance went to actress Zs\u00f3fia Szamosi<\/strong>, the star of Hungarian film One Day <\/strong>(Egy nap, 2018) from director Zs\u00f3fia Szil\u00e1gyi. Extolling the precision of her performance, the jury praised her ability to \u201ccreate an astute portrait of a modern woman and make us care about her.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Blue Angel for Best Director was granted to Serbian director Ognjen Galvoni\u0107<\/strong> for the drama The Load<\/strong> (Teret, 2018). \u201cStep by step,\u201d said the jury, \u201cthe director drags us emotionally into his imaginary world by fragilely touching the deepness of the human mind.\u201d The impressions left by the film stayed with the jurors long after they left the cinema.<\/p>\n

The jury also decided to grant two special mentions to films they considered exceptional. One was the Slovak title The Last Self-Portrait<\/strong> (2017), the intimate confession of director Marek Kubo\u0161, which the jury called \u201cfull of humour\u201d, while saying that it nevertheless \u201cconfronts us with basic questions about the passage of time, loneliness and the roots of art\u201d. The second special mention went to a film that \u201chas a touching story and very emotional characters\u201d and \u201cdeals with serious matters in a very humorous and entertaining way.\u201d That film is Turkish picture Butterflies<\/strong> (Kelebekler, 2018) from director Tolga Kara\u00e7elik.<\/p>\n

The jury of the International Competition of Short Films bestowed its Blue Angel upon Swedish short Shadow Animals<\/strong> (Skuggdjur, 2017) from director Jerry Carlsson. In the jury\u2019s view, the film is a purposive \u201cmetaphor of social standards and stereotypes\u201d, an \u201cimaginative vision\u201d that nonetheless remains faithful to Swedish cinematographic tradition, creating \u201ca surrealist space where fantasy and individualism have no reason for being.\u201d<\/p>\n

The short films jury also granted a special mention to the abstract Flame<\/strong> (Polte, 2018), citing director Sami van Ingen\u2019s powerful work with scraps of damaged footage and calling the film \u201cthe last witness of an era long forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two prizes were awarded by festival viewers, who cast their votes via internet. The Joj Cinema Audience Award for Best Feature Film <\/strong>went to What Will People Say <\/strong>(Hva vil folk si, 2017), in which director Iram Haq tells the story of 16-year-old Nishe, who tries to strike a balance between two roles: the conscientious daughter of a Pakistani immigrant, and a teenager growing up in today\u2019s Europe. The Art Film Fest Audience Award for Best Competing Short Film<\/strong> went to French picture Negative Space<\/strong> (2017) from directorial duo Max Porter and Ru Kuwahata. Their poetic tale portrays the relationship between a father and son. In an attempt to reach out to his son, the father decides to teach him how to pack his suitcase.<\/p>\n

Festival Azyl<\/strong>, the international online festival of one-minute films, five-minute films and music videos, granted three prizes during the ceremony. The award for best one-minute film went to British filmmaker Daniel McKee for Mona Lisa Selfie<\/strong> (2017). The Festival Azyl jury deemed the best five-minute film to be Prague: A Foreigner\u2019s Perspective<\/strong> (2017) from Czech director Daria Kashcheeva. In this year\u2019s music video competition, the video to Christian L\u00f6ffler\u2019s Haul <\/strong>(2017) came out on top, directed by Marek Party\u0161, another Czech filmmaker.<\/p>\n

The festival\u2019s red-carpet conclusion also featured the bestowal of the Actor’s Mission Award<\/strong>. As the second recipient this year, following Zuzana Maur\u00e9ry, star Czech actress Ivana Ch\u00fdlkov\u00e1<\/strong> received the award.<\/p>\n

The 26th Art Film Fest began on Friday, 15 June 2018 and ended on Saturday, 23 June 2018 with the screening of the documentary Whitney<\/strong> (2018), devoted to the legendary diva. Altogether over 200 films were screened, along with numerous discussions, exhibitions, concerts and other accompanying events for film enthusiasts as well as everyone else.<\/p>\n
