City of Kosice \/ 21. \u2013 28. june 2024 \/ 8 days \/ 13 sections \/ 50 countries \/ 143 films \/ 171 projections \/ 21 759 visitors<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”aff-lead”]The festival introduced a new competitive section \u2013 the International Competition of Films from Central and Eastern Europe, highlighting the event’s international character. The honorary award Actor’s Mission was presented to Ant\u00f3nia Li\u0161kov\u00e1 and Maro\u0161 Kram\u00e1r. The Golden Camera award was given to three exceptional directors \u2013 Miloslav Luther (Slovakia), Cristi Puiu (Romania), and Sergei Loznitsa (Ukraine), who not only personally introduced their films at the festival but also held masterclasses. [\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=””]The 30th<\/sup> jubilee edition of the Art Film IFF is coming to an end and on Thursday evening the closing ceremony took place in the Kunsthalle, at which the Blue Angel, the Golden Camera and the Actor\u2019s Mission honorary award were presented. The awarding ceremony was held in a pleasant spirit, but important social messages were also conveyed. The well-known moderator Bruno Ciberej led the festival audience through the festive evening. He opened the ceremony by presenting the JOJ Cinema Audience Award for a feature-length film. The highest number of audience votes and the award went to Katalina Moldovai\u2019s Without Air<\/em><\/strong>. TV JOJ reporter Katar\u00edna Kleknerov\u00e1 announced the awarded film.<\/p>\n

In the International Competition of Short Films category, the professional jury decided to give special recognition to three short films, namely An Orange from Jaffa<\/em><\/strong>, Cross My<\/em><\/strong> Heart and Hope to Die<\/em><\/strong> and finally Nun or Never!<\/em><\/strong>. But the final moment of the Short Film Competition was the Blue Angel, awarded to Bill Morrison\u2019s Incident<\/em><\/strong>, a reconstruction of the 2018 Chicago police shooting. The American director spoke to the festival audience and expressed his gratitude through a video message. Czech filmmaker Martin Kuba, a jury member, said at the award ceremony: \u201cChoosing the winner was not easy at all. It\u2019s rare to see so many quality and strong short films in one competition. However, finally, we opted for the film Incident, which cleverly uses modern surveillance technology to reconstruct the tragedy from all human perspectives. The fragments of the incident of illegal shooting by the police put together a larger picture of society, fear and prejudice, which is the driving force behind the recurrence of such tragedies<\/em>.<\/p>\n

After the short film competition came the newly established competition category International Competition of Central and Eastern European Films. The jury awarded the Blue Angel for the best film from Central and Eastern Europe to the feature debut of Polish director Klaudiusz Chrostowski, Ultima Thule<\/strong><\/em>. The award was presented by the jury chair Sylvia Husz\u00e1r from Hungary and the Audiovisual Fund director Vladim\u00edr Burianek. The director of the winning film, Klaudiusz Chrostowski, received the award in person. In his speech, he thanked the crew members and revealed his intention to shoot another film from the Polish-Slovak border area. The jury awarded special recognition to the animated film Pelikan Blue<\/strong><\/em>, directed by L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Cs\u00e1ki.<\/p>\n

Three special recognitions were also awarded in the acting category. The first was earned by actor Cl\u00e9ment Faveau for his role in the comedy drama Holy Cow!<\/em><\/strong>. Recognition also went to the female acting duo of the winning film Goodbye Julia<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Eiman Yousif and Siran Riak. The third recognition went to the Japanese film Rei<\/em><\/strong> by debut director Toshihiko Tanaka. Toshihika\u2019s thank-you speech was delivered via a video call from distant Hokkaido, and he revealed to the festival audience that he was going to shoot his next film there.<\/p>\n

In the Blue Angel category for Best Actress, the award went to Danish actress Trine Dyrholm for her performance in The Girl with the Needle<\/em><\/strong>. The award was presented by the chairman of the jury of the feature film competition, Kurdish-Swiss director and screenwriter Mano Khalil and Ing. \u013dudov\u00edt \u0160ipo\u0161, a Member of the Board of Directors and the Financial Director of V\u00fdchodoslovensk\u00e1 energetika (Eastern Slovakia Energy Company), to the director of The Girl with the Needle, Magnus von Horn, as the award-winning actress was unable to attend the festival in person. The Blue Angel for Best Male Actor went to Danish actor Sebastian Bull for his role in Gustav M\u00f6ller\u2019s prison drama Sons<\/em><\/strong>. Sebastian Bull received the award in person. Martina Fatykova, Marketing Manager, TIPOS National Lottery Company and Mano Khalil, member of the jury, presented it to him. \u201cThis is my first award in my life and I will always remember it,\u201d <\/em>the award-winning actor said in his thank-you speech.<\/p>\n

The jury awarded the Blue Angel for Best Director to director Magnus von Horn for his haunting drama The Girl with the Needle<\/em><\/strong>, inspired by the horrific events in Denmark in the period shortly after the end of WWI. This was Magnus\u2019 second time on stage and the award was presented to him by Mano Khalil and Gergely Santha, on behalf of EUK Force. \u201cThank you very much to the festival and the jury for having a good taste.<\/em> It\u2019s a film about the unwanted and how to remain a good person even when the world around you is evil,<\/em>\u201d said Magnus von Horn in his thank-you speech.<\/p>\n

The Golden Camera Award for outstanding contribution to the field of cinema was received at the ceremony by the famous Ukrainian director Serhiy Loznitsa<\/strong> from the hands of the festival\u2019s art director Martin Pal\u00fach. In his speech, the art director Martin Pal\u00fach revealed interesting facts from the filmography of the famous director. In 1996, the Art Film IFF selected one of Loznitsa\u2019s first films, the documentary Today We Are Going to Build a House<\/em><\/strong> (1995, co-directed by Marat Magambetov), for the Student Film Competition. \u201cIt is a great honour for me!<\/em> We must have the opportunity to make films about important and difficult issues in our history. I say this because I feel that the ground is beginning to disappear from under our feet and it is important to draw attention to this and to make films like this. Peace to Ukraine and all of us,<\/em>\u201d said the winner of the Golden Camera award, Serhiy Loznitsa, in his speech.<\/p>\n

Since 1995, the Actor\u2019s Mission Honorary Award has been presented at the Art Film IFF to actors for their outstanding contribution to the art of acting. Two honorary awards were presented at the ceremony. The first Actor\u2019s Mission Award went to the actress Ant\u00f3nia L\u00ed\u0161kov\u00e1<\/strong>. The actress began her career in Rome and became known for her numerous roles in Italian films. She received the award from Adriana Kronerov\u00e1, who worked closely with Li\u0161kov\u00e1 on the series Mistresses <\/em>and the films Happy New Year<\/em> and Happy New Year 2: Dobro do\u0161li<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The second honorary award, the Actor\u2019s Mission Award, went to the Slovak actor Maro\u0161 Kram\u00e1r<\/strong>. The award was presented to him by his son Timur Kram\u00e1r, who in a moving speech described Maro\u0161 not only as an actor but also as a great father. \u201cThank you very much, Art Film, for this award<\/em>. Film is a wonderful thing and my work is also wonderful. However, lately, I\u2019ve been encountering this notion that \u2018you\u2019re an actor and don\u2019t meddle in politics.\u2019 However, I think this is not the right view. Film, theatre and culture in general are not here for entertainment only. Culture should also educate and teach us. I think it is very important in these times for culture to mirror this period<\/em>,\u201d said the laureate of the Actor\u2019s Mission award in his thank-you speech.<\/p>\n

The final point of the closing ceremony was the presentation of the Blue Angel Award for the Best Feature Film. The professional jury awarded this prestigious award to the Sudanese drama Goodbye, Julia<\/em><\/strong>, which tells the story of the friendship of two women with different religious beliefs. Director Mohamed Kordofani arrived in person in Ko\u0161ice and received the award from the jury member Man Khalil. \u201cI shot this film a year and a half ago. When the post-production of the film started, we said that after finishing the film, we had to release it at home in Sudan, but three months after we finished it, the war began in Sudan. Since then I have been travelling the world showing this film. I\u2019m a bit tired of it, but I\u2019m lucky compared to the Sudanese who stayed in Sudan. I therefore call on the politicians to stop this war and I call on you to put pressure on the authorities that can help Sudan<\/em>,\u201d said Kordofani.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

Anna Kryvenko is an Ukrainian visual artist and filmmaker based in Prague and Kyiv. She is a graduate of the Centre for Audio\u2011visual Studies at Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU, Prague). Her films and performances were screened at Dok Leipziig, ZagrebDox, Visions du Reel Nyon, Jihlava IDFF etc. She participated in several solo and group exhibitions. With her found\u2011footage

Mano Khalil<\/h2>
Mano Khalil is a Kurdish-Swiss filmmaker born in Syrian Kurdistan who currently resides and works in Switzerland. From 1981 to 1986, he studied history and law at Damascus University in Syria. Subsequently, from 1987 to 1994, he pursued studies in fiction film direction in the former Czechoslovakia. Between 1990 and 1995, Khalil worked as an independent film director for Czechoslovak television and later for Slovak television. Since 1996, he has been based in Switzerland, working as a director and producer. In 2012, he founded Frame Film Production in Bern. His first feature documentary Our Garden of Eden (Unser Garten Eden, 2010) premiered at Berlinale. This was followed by Beekeeper (Der Imker, 2013) which won at the DOK.fest in Munich. After his first feature fiction The Swallow (Die Schwalbe, 2016) he released the documentary Hafis & Mara (2018) and the successful drama Neighbours (Nachbarn, 2021), which was screened at more than 200 film festivals and won 70 awards worldwide.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n[vc_empty_space]

Marek Kubo\u0161<\/h2>
Marek Kubo\u0161 graduated from the University of \u017dilina at the Faculty of Operation and Economics of Transport and Communications, then studied at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, where in the 1990s he became part of a strong generation of young Slovak documentary filmmakers (P. Kerekes, M. \u0160kop, J. Vojtek, Z. Piussi, J. Lehotsk\u00fd, R. Kirchhoff). He started his professional career with internationally acclaimed films such as A Photographer\u2019s Journey (Cesta fotografa, 1995), Train Station 2nd Class Kra\u013eovany (\u017del. st. 2. tr., 1998), Voice 98 (Hlas 98, 1999) and Just a Little Propaganda (Tak\u00e1 mal\u00e1 propaganda, 2001). In 2018, he made his debut as a director of The Last Self\u2011Portrait (Posledn\u00fd autoportr\u00e9t). He followed a similar process \u2013 interviewing filmmakers of three generations \u2013 to make his second feature film \u00b1 90 (2022). He also makes music videos. His films are characterized by their thematic diversity and social commitment. Lucia Hurajov\u00e1<\/h2>
Lucia Hurajov\u00e1 is a theatre and television actress and also a producer. In 1997\u20132001 she studied at the Department of Acting at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava in the class of Bo\u017eidara Turzonov\u00e1 and in 2009\u20132013 she completed her doctoral studies in the field of theatre science. During her acting studies, she completed a one\u2011year internship in Paris at the Conservatoire National Sup\u00e9rieur d\u2019Art Dramatique. After her studies, she worked as a freelance actress. She became a tribal member of the T\u00falav\u00e9 divadlo, where she is still active today. She has also been a guest in many productions of other theatres in Bratislava, such as the GUnaGU Theatre, the Arena Theatre, the Nov\u00e1 sc\u00e9na Theatre, the P. O. Hviezdoslav Theatre and the Studio L+S. She has acted in several Slovak

Martin Kuba<\/h2>
Martin Kuba studied directing at FAMU in Prague. Until now, he has mainly worked on short films. These have been screened at more than 70 festivals around the world, for example in Montreal, Warsaw, Karlovy Vary and Cairo. His last short film Vinland (2022) won the Magnesia Award for Best Student Film at the 30th Czech Lions, the Trilobit Award for Outstanding Audiovisual Work, and the Best Film Award at the Pragueshorts Festival. He is now completing his feature debut, the genre drama Three Weeks Under the Sea. Birgit Beumers is Professor emeritus in Film Studies, Aberystwyth University (UK) and currently affiliated with the University of Passau (Germany), where she is working on a research project that explores the film industries of Central Asia. Previously, she has taught in Russian Studies at Cambridge and Bristol universities. She specialises in Russian culture, cinema and theatre, and the cinemas of the former Soviet territories, especially Central Asia. Sylvia Husz\u00e1r is a theatre scholar, translator, and producer with a strong international background. Since 1988 she has been living and working in Budapest. She has worked as a film and theatre and visual arts collaborator at the Slovak Institute in Budapest. In 2007-2012 she was a press officer and foreign relations manager at the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest.
